Retirement Questions, Answered

More clarity for the decisions ahead.

Understanding your retirement options starts with asking questions. Explore common concerns about annuities, income, costs, and access to your money—then let’s talk about your individual situation.

Can I lose money with a fixed indexed annuity?

Value can decline despite an index-linked interest floor. A fixed indexed annuity generally avoids negative interest credits caused by index declines. However, withdrawals, surrender charges, rider charges, and applicable adjustments can reduce the amount available.

Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability. Review the contract’s guarantees and cash surrender value separately.

What fees and costs should I review?

Costs vary by contract. Ask for a written explanation of base-contract charges, optional rider charges, strategy fees, surrender charges, and any market value adjustment.

A contract without an annual management fee still has tradeoffs. Crediting limits affect potential interest, and withdrawal restrictions affect flexibility.

Will my annuity income stay the same?

It depends on the payment option and contract. Fixed payments may remain level, while other benefits follow different rules. Ask what is guaranteed, what can change, and which actions could reduce payments.

What happens if I become ill or pass away?

Some contracts offer health-related withdrawal waivers, subject to eligibility conditions. Beneficiary payments depend on the death-benefit provisions and the income option selected.

Do not assume every payment option preserves a remaining balance for heirs. Ask how your chosen arrangement treats a spouse and other beneficiaries.

Can an annuity provide income for life?

Lifetime income may be available through an annuity payment option or an optional rider. Eligibility, payout amounts, costs, and restrictions depend on the contract.

Discuss whether income is needed for one person or two, when payments should begin, and how much access to principal you want to retain.

Will my retirement income keep up with inflation?

Level payments lose purchasing power as prices rise. Some options provide increases, but those increases may not match actual inflation.

Review how increases are calculated, their cost, and how your other retirement resources can help address rising expenses.

Can I access my money when I need it?

Access depends on your contract and whether income payments have begun. Confirm the withdrawal allowance, surrender schedule, and effect of withdrawals on benefits.

“Surrender-charge-free” does not mean tax-free. Taxable withdrawals before age 59½ may also face an additional 10% federal tax unless an exception applies. Keep near-term cash needs in mind before committing funds.

Your questions deserve a personal conversation.
