Life Insurance

Life insurance can do more than provide a death benefit — it can help protect your family, support legacy goals, and in some cases provide living benefits and added flexibility within a retirement plan.

Life insurance.
A personal decision.

Begin with the people who depend on you, the commitments you want to honor, and the legacy you hope to leave. Then explore coverage with those priorities in mind.

Family connection across generations
Thoughtful planning starts with understanding what—and who—matters most to you.

Start With Your Priorities

What would you want coverage to accomplish?

Life insurance planning begins with a practical conversation about your family, financial responsibilities, and existing resources.

01 / Family

Support the people you love

Consider income needs, household expenses, debt, education goals, and the resources your family would have available.

02 / Legacy

Plan with intention

Discuss what you want to leave behind and review how coverage, ownership, and beneficiary choices relate to those wishes.

03 / Business

Consider business continuity

Explore potential coverage needs connected to ownership transitions, key people, and business commitments alongside your legal and tax advisors.

Understand Your Options

Match the coverage to the need.

Policy types have different purposes, costs, and requirements. Your time horizon and budget belong in the discussion from the beginning.

Coverage for a Defined Period

Term Life Insurance

Term insurance provides coverage for a specified period and generally does not build cash value.

  • Review the coverage amount and term length.
  • Understand what happens when the term ends.
  • Ask about any renewal or conversion provisions.
Longer-Term Coverage

Permanent Life Insurance

Permanent policies can provide long-term coverage and may build cash value, subject to policy funding and other requirements.

  • Compare guaranteed and nonguaranteed values.
  • Review premiums, charges, and funding needs.
  • Understand what is required to maintain coverage.

Look Beyond the Headline

Know the details behind the benefits.

A policy should be understood as a whole: its protection, costs, conditions, and responsibilities over time.

How are death benefits generally taxed?

Life insurance proceeds received because of the insured person’s death are generally excluded from the beneficiary’s federal gross income. Exceptions can apply, and interest paid on proceeds is generally taxable. Review ownership and tax questions with your tax and legal advisors.

What should I understand about cash value?

Ask which values are guaranteed, which depend on assumptions, and how policy charges affect them. Review how much funding may be needed to keep the policy in force.

What happens if I take a policy loan or withdrawal?

Loans and withdrawals can reduce available policy value and the benefit paid to beneficiaries. Loan interest, lapse risk, and potential tax consequences should be reviewed before accessing funds.

What are living or accelerated benefits?

Some policies offer riders that allow access to part of a death benefit following a qualifying illness or condition. Eligibility, costs, tax treatment, and the effect on remaining benefits depend on the policy and rider.

Should I replace an existing policy?

Begin with a review of your current coverage, guarantees, costs, and benefits. Ask about underwriting, surrender charges, and what would change or be lost before considering a replacement or exchange.
